At the end of this activity, you will be able to explain how a career pathway and goal impacts your decision about what type of college or training program you attend after high school.

Review the Career Pathways and Goals Fact Sheet along with any other resources and complete the activity below.

Think about...

  • Why is it important to know your skills, interests, and potential barriers when making career goals for your future?
  • Why is it important to have a career pathway and goals in mind when exploring college and training options?
  • Why is it important to know the job requirements for careers you are interested in?
  • Why is it important to find a college or training program that offers classes that align with your career goals?
  • Why is it important to think about the supports and accommodations you will need when exploring college and training options?

Instructions

  • Open the Activity Cards
  • Open the fillable Answer Form OR print and cut out the activity cards
  • Read each Career card and match it to the Postsecondary Education Program that would be the best fit
  • Find Postsecondary Education card matches for each Career Card
  • Answer the reflection questions on the fillable Answer Form after completing the activity
  • For more practice, search online for additional college or training options for each Career card

Instructions

  • Research the college or training programs you are interested in attending
  • Choose a program that provides the education you would need for your career goals
  • Schedule a tour or interview in-person, over the phone, or virtually with a staff member at the college or training program
  • Download the Recording Form and before you complete your tour or interview, answer the Pre-Interview Questions
  • During the tour or interview, ask the staff member the questions on the form and record their answers
  • Complete the reflection questions as you think about if this postsecondary education program would be a good fit for you

Reflect

  • Can the postsecondary education program support you in achieving your career goals? Why or why not?
  • What other factors besides your career goals might impact your decision to attend this program (ex: location, time, budget, admission requirements)?
  • Why do you think it is important to have career goals when choosing a postsecondary education program?
  • Why is it important to also consider your interests, skills, and potential barriers when choosing where to continue your education after high school?
