Think about...

  • What information can you learn about careers and jobs by networking?
  • Who do you currently have in your professional network that can help you learn about careers?
  • Who do you currently have in your personal network that can connect you to a person that can help you learn about careers?
  • How can networking help you with choosing a career that matches your skills and interests?

Instructions

There are many people in your community that can be part of your professional and personal networks. Identifying the connections you have can help you to learn more about specific job opportunities. In this activity, you will practice categorizing people into a personal or professional network.

Instructions

Networking takes time and practice. It is important that you reach out to build your network by making new connections. For this activity, you are going to practice reaching out to people and asking questions about their career.

    • Download or print the Networking Interview Form
    • Identify 3 individuals that would feel comfortable talking with to learn more about their jobs
    • Reach out to each person. You can contact them in-person, through email, or a phone call.
    • As you ask your questions, fill in the information you learn on the recording form
    • Answer the reflection questions

Reflect

  • How do you plan to continue building your network?
  • What did you learn about the careers you are interested in?
  • How have these people helped you with your decision to get a job?
  • Which careers are you no longer interested in? 
  • What other opportunities can help you grow your network?
