Based upon the results of this personal survey, students draw a tree that graphically illustrates their strengths and weaknesses and their hopes, expectations, and fears in each area. Next they set goals to strengthen their trees, which actually represent the students’ lives. Finally, concrete action plans are developed for goals, and a monitoring system is set up for checking progress on action plans. Has been used successfully with elementary, middle, and high school students.

All students’ perceptions of their self-awareness, self-advocacy skills, and goal setting abilities significantly increased from pre-test to post-test with no significant difference between groups. Student perceptions related to self-awareness, self-advocacy skills, and goal setting skills at posttest were significantly higher than both teacher perceptions and parent perceptions of students’ skills. The results of this study demonstrate that high school students can learn the Possible Selves program in 14 hours of instructional time.  Stringfellow, J. L.
