This practice resource describes The Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction (SDLMI; Wehmeyer, Palmer, Agran, Mithuag, & Martin, 2000) and how teachers and other personnel can use the
model to support students to:

• Learn and use skills that enable them to self-regulate problem solving leading to goal setting and attainment
• Achieve meaningful learning goals across multiple curricular domains
• Work toward and achieve academic and transition goals
• Achieve better school and post-school outcomes
• Become more self-determined

Research Summary:

Twenty-one research studies of the SDLMI and its impact on student outcomes were identified. The evidence suggests that SDLMI offers a successful approach to teaching student self-determination which can lead to success in school and post-secondary life, and in attaining self-selected goals.
