Review the Experiences to Learn About Work Fact Sheet along with any other resources and complete the activity below.

Think about...

  • What information can you learn about careers and jobs by participating in community activities?  
  • How can participating in community activities help you with choosing a career that matches your skills and interests?  
  • Which community experiences are you interested in participating in? For example, online searches, workplace tours, informational interviews, job shadows, school-based enterprises, career mentors.   
  • Is there a community experience that does not interest you? Explain why you are not interested in the activity.  

Instructions

Participating in different community experiences will help you learn more about career options and jobs that interest you. Community experiences can also help you understand which careers and jobs match your skills. These experiences will help you choose a job or career that will help you to reach your career goals.

  • Download or print the Graphic Organizer Activity Form 
  • Read the directions  
  • Review the example Venn Diagram that compares workplace tours and job shadow experiences 
  • Use the word bank to find the similarities and differences between what students will learn at a workplace tour and job shadow

Instructions

Identifying companies and businesses the student is interested in learning more about takes time and practice. For this activity, you will identify two businesses or companies you want to learn more about. Then, you will complete the form with the information. You will use the information you gathered to decide which businesses or companies you will contact to set up a community experience.  

  • Download or print the How Do I Find Information About a Business or Company form 
  • Choose a web browser to complete your online search 
  • Identify 2 business or companies you want to find more information about  
  • Start you search by entering the name of the business in your web browser 
  • Visit each business or company website and their social media pages 
  • Record the information you find on the form 
  • List any additional questions you have about the business or company 
  • Discuss with your teacher or Pre-ETS Provider reaching out to the business or company to schedule a community experience 
  • Review the reflection questions
